Project details

In June 1998, the Global March against Child Labor took place in Geneva, during the UN Conference on the Convention of the worst forms of Child Labor. Many events organized around this conference turned out to be a big success thanks to the numerous volunteers who contributed to the event. * a * b * c In May 1999, 16 exploited children came to Geneva to stress the importance of the new convention to be approved by the member states of the International Labor Organization (ILO). Various events were organized: international workshops during the weekend of Whit Sunday, meetings with Swiss children, brainstorming sessions at ILO, a meeting with the High Commissioner on Human Rights of United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR), Mary Robinson and with the President of the Swiss Confederation, Ruth Dreifuss. In presence of Bill Clinton and others, the Convention was approved by the member states of the International Labor Organization (ILO).

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteers helped with:

  • Translation for the international workshops in St. Cergue during the week-end of Whit Sunday (22 to 24 May 1999).
  • Translation to accompany the children during the various days of exchange (25 to 31 May 1999).

The main languages spoken were: French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, as well as Hindi and Bengali.
