Project details

Spilled oil, the death of thousands of birds

The Prestige, an oil tanker, sank after splitting in two in heavy weather about 200 kilometers (130 miles) northwest of the Spanish coast in November 2002.

It continues to spew out its 77,000-tonne cargo of fuel oil after coming to rest about 2.3 miles (3,500 meters) down on the seabed. A quarter of its cargo is estimated to have leaked to the surface, at a rate of 100 tonnes a day, mainly hitting the fishing villages off Galicia in Spain.

Thousands of birds have died in the region and many more are covered with oil.

Volunteering Opportunities

What can you do?

We are looking for volunteers to participate in Galicia in the international campaign to rescue these birds. The main task will be to walk along the beach in order to spot birds covered with oil.
