Project details

22nd session WGIP:

The annual session of the United Nations Working Group on Indigenous Populations (WGIP) gives indigenous communities an opportunity to increase international awareness of the state of their human rights and allows participants to discuss solutions to existing problems, including the setting of standards on specific issues like land or cultural rights.

The theme of this year's session, "Indigenous peoples and conflict resolutions", is of fundamental importance given its relevance to current political, economic and social issues, including the plight of indigenous peoples in the face of major development projects.

Participants were looking at, among other things, root sources of conflict between indigenous peoples, on the one hand, and States, and non-indigenous entities and individuals, on the other, including their differing views on who possesses valid title to land and resources located in territories traditionally occupied by indigenous groups. Another issue examined was the lack of respect for treaties, agreements and other arrangements between Indigenous peoples and States, to the detriment of the indigenous Party, which leads to conflict over identity, land title and resources.

56th sub-commission human rights:

The United Nations Commission on Human Rights, composed of 53 States, meets each year in regular session in March/April for six weeks in Geneva. Over 3,000 delegates from member and observer States and from non-governmental organizations participate.

The Commission can also meet exceptionally between its regular sessions in special session, provided that a majority of States members of the Commission so agree, mindful of the need for the Commission on Human Rights to deal with urgent and acute human rights situations in the most expeditious way.

During its regular annual session, the Commission adopts about a hundred resolutions, decisions and Chairperson's statements on matters of relevance to individuals in all regions and circumstances. It is assisted in this work by the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, a number of working groups and a network of individual experts, representatives and rapporteurs mandated to report to it on specific issues.

The sixtieth session of the Commission on Human Rights was held at the United Nations Office at Geneva from 15 March to 23 April 2004.
